The EMS division is made up of approximately 30 volunteer members. The main
responsibility of these members is to run on the departments two (2)
Ambulances. All members must be trained to the EMT-D or MRT-D level. The
Somers Fire Department EMS Division is certified to the EMT-D level of care.
This level allows the EMT's and MRT's to provide basic level care which
includes CPR with defibrillator, airway management with oxygen, bleeding
control, and fracture management.
On many occasions other
personnel are needed to offer the best level of care for all our patients,
so we use emergency medical technicians at the paramedic level. These
personnel are mostly from the
Ambulance Service of Manchester (ASM),
American Medical Response
(AMR), and
East Windsor Ambulance
services. This
level of care is able to provide intravenous medications and EKG monitoring.
If you
are interested in becoming an EMT or MRT please feel free to contact anyone
at the fire station. The EMT class is 130 hours and the MRT class runs
50 hours. Both classes are held at the fire house, Johnson Memorial
Hospital and Asnuntuck Community College among other sites. Please contact
Deputy Chief Steve Austin
or Captain Robert Kozaczka
for more information.
Meetings
are held on the 3rd Sunday and Training sessions are held on the
4th Sunday of every month.
